What are pesticides?
Pesticides are used to protect plants and plant products against pests, weeds and mold in the agriculture, forestry and horticulture.

Where are pesticides?
Pesticide residues may be present in foods treated or have come into contact with pesticides during cultivation, storage or transport. These include fruits, vegetables and cereals.
Plants used as animal feed are sometimes treated with plant protection and animal or animal housing can be treated with pesticides. This means that the residues can also be found in foods like meat, milk and eggs.
Pesticide residues may also be present in surface waters and groundwater, but then in very low concentrations.

How much do we get in our bodies?
Via food ingestion we consume very tiny amounts of pesticides. There are limits on the amount of pesticides that may be present in food. The limits are set at a very low level. This means that the food is safe for all consumer groups, even vegetarians, children and pregnant.

What is the limit?
Before a pesticide is approved for use in the cultivation, there will be carried out a comprehensive evaluation of its impact on health and environment. The requirements have been tightened in recent years, and many substances used previously is no longer approved.
